How to check whether the spark plug is working properly? Simple test method tutorial

Update:11 Mar, 2025

To check whether the spark plug can work properly, you can use the following simple methods to judge

1. Appearance inspection method
Observe the color of the spark plug
Normal state: The spark plug electrode and the insulator skirt should be grayish white or light brown, with no carbon deposits or oil stains on the surface. If it is reddish brown and the electrode gap is uniform, it means good combustion
Abnormal state: Black carbon deposits: The mixture is too rich or the oil has penetrated into the combustion chamber, and the spark plug needs to be cleaned or replaced
Pale white or melted: The spark plug is overheated or the engine is poorly cooled, and the calorific value needs to be checked or the engine is working
Oil stains or cracks are found: It may be caused by oil leakage or mechanical damage, and the spark plug needs to be replaced

2. Traditional spark test
Steps: Remove the spark plug, connect the high-voltage cap, and contact the metal shell of the spark plug with the engine cylinder block (ground). Start the motorcycle (electric start or foot starter) and observe the spark between the electrodes.
Normal phenomenon: blue or blue-white sparks, accompanied by a "pop" sound, indicating normal ignition
Abnormal phenomenon: weak sparks (dark red), no sparks or intermittent sparks, the spark plug needs to be replaced
Note: Avoid direct contact with the spark plug with your hands during testing, and use insulated pliers to clamp it! ! !

3. Electrode gap detection and adjustment
Measure the gap: Use a feeler gauge or hacksaw blade (thickness of about 0.6-0.8mm) to insert between the electrodes. If it is too wide or too narrow, adjust it in time
Adjustment method: Tap the side electrode or use special tools to bend the electrode to the standard value to ensure uniform gap

4. Precautions
Safety protection: Wear insulating gloves during testing to avoid high-voltage electric shock
Environmental cleaning: Before disassembly and assembly, pay attention to cleaning the dust around the spark plug hole to prevent foreign objects from falling into the cylinder
Replacement suggestion: The life of nickel alloy spark plugs is about 10,000-20,000 kilometers, and iridium/platinum spark plugs can reach 30,000-50,000 kilometers. If frequent failures occur, it is recommended to upgrade the material

Summary
The above methods can quickly determine whether the spark plug is normal: pay attention to color and wear during appearance inspection, spark test to verify ignition performance, and tool assistance to simplify operation. If abnormalities are found during detection, the spark plug should be replaced in time and the engine fault should be checked
