How does the ignition gap of Hex size 16mm automotive spark plugs affect engine performance?

Update:20 Dec, 2024

1. Ignition energy:
If the ignition gap is too small, the ignition energy will be too weak, because there is not enough spark gap during ignition, which may lead to incomplete combustion and power loss.
If the ignition gap is too large, although the arc will be longer and it will be easier to ignite the mixture in the cylinder, the required breakdown voltage will also increase, which may make the engine difficult to start and prone to "misfire" at high speeds.

2. Ignition time:
The change of the spark plug gap will also cause the spark plug to change the instantaneous ignition time. Since the ignition time of the spark plug is calculated in milliseconds when the engine is running at high speed, the change of the gap will affect the accuracy of the spark plug ignition.

3. Ignition stability:
If the ignition gap is too large or too small, it may affect the ignition stability of the spark plug. If the gap is too small, it is easy to cause carbon accumulation and leakage of the spark plug, and if the gap is too large, it may cause ignition failure due to insufficient voltage.

4. Engine performance:
The change of ignition gap will directly affect the ignition efficiency and combustion process of the engine, thus affecting the engine's power output, fuel economy and emission performance.
