About the daily maintenance of marine spark plugs

Update:22 Apr, 2025

1. Regular inspection and cleaning
Observe the color of the spark plug: Normally it should be yellow-pink. If it is black, it indicates that the fuel is not fully burned or the mixture ratio is abnormal. Check whether the electrode is worn, whether the insulator is cracked or carbonized. If carbon deposits are found, they can be sprayed with carburetor cleaning agent. Stubborn carbon deposits can be soaked in an ultrasonic cleaner for 20-30 minutes and then cleaned with a toothbrush. After use, the spark plug seat hole needs to be rinsed with fresh water to prevent the electrode from corrosion caused by residual seawater salt. Before long-term deactivation, rust inhibitor (such as LPS3) should be sprayed, and high-temperature grease should be applied to the metal surface to prevent oxidation.

2. Installation and sealing management
Clean the threads before installation, and tighten them with a torque wrench after manual pre-tightening. When replacing, use a spark plug sleeve with a rubber ring to prevent electrode deformation and ensure that there is no moisture residue in the ignition coil plug. Regularly check whether the spark plug seal is aging and leaking. If oil leakage is found, the seal must be replaced immediately, otherwise it may cause excessive exhaust gas or damage to the three-way catalytic converter.

3. Fuel system and operation management
Use fuel containing stabilizer to prevent long-term storage from causing colloid to clog the injection hole. Mixed oil (two-stroke engine) must be strictly proportioned with special marine engine oil to avoid carbon deposits or cylinder pull.
Check the fuel filter before each start to prevent impurities from entering the combustion chamber and affecting the spark plug ignition.
